Encaustic Painting History

Encaustic painting is an ancient Roman method of painting using heated, pigmented beeswax applied to a rigid surface. The finished product has a transparency and finish unlike any other painting medium, which is also extremely durable.

Process

In his artwork, Hecht employs a wide range of materials and skills. Some compositions include various one of a kind 19th century antiques from Hecht's collection of ephemera. He uses his own photography which is then digitally transformed and combined with the antique elements. Working near his home in Santa Cruz, California, as well as such remote locations as Turkey, Greece, New Zealand, Australia, and Hawaii, Hecht photographs natural objects and landscapes. These images (some shot with specialized underwater gear, form the beginning of highly textured encaustic paintings. Each work tells a unique story.

Most works are 44" in one direction, however alternate sizes are available for most artworks. New work is sold in limited editions of up to 10 works in various sizes. All individual works are painted with beeswax differently, resulting in a totally unique artwork for each piece in the limited edition run.

Encaustic painting is a complex, painstaking process. Mr. Hecht creates his own encaustic paints using high-quality dry pigments and his homemade recipe of encaustic medium. Similar in function to linseed oil in an oil painting, encaustic medium is a mixture of melted beeswax, damar resin crystals, and man-made waxes.

Working on braced mahogany wood, Hecht applies multiple layers of molten wax fusing each layer with heat guns, irons, and heated drawing tools. These layers become thin glazes of color that create the unique transparency of encaustic painting.

A faint, sweet aroma of beeswax is evident for several years.

Hecht can also be commissioned on a limited basis for encaustic paintings tailored to the interest of the individual. On site landscape images photographed from a client's home are occasionally considered.
